Most Louisvillians can tell you at least one of Louisville’s celebrity claims to fame. Depending on the age of the person you talk to you will undoubtedly hear names like Tom Cruise, Muhammad Ali, and Hunter S Thompson. There is no shortage of Louisville natives that have spent time in the spotlight, however it becomes very interesting now with this thing called “the internet” to be able to narrow down specifics about these people that have helped put our sweet city on the map. Growing up in the Cherokee Triangle I have heard numerous Hunter S Thompson stories, however the most recent involves his childhood home in the Highlands at 2437 Ransdell Ave.
Until recently I had never really known the address of his home, nor did I know it was on Ransdell, but selling homes in The Highlands of Louisville, KY is a great way to find out some interesting history that you didn’t know! Granted the address is actually listed in the Hunter S Thompson Wikipedia page, but I prefer having multiple sources of information. Ransdell Ave is a fantastic street in the Cherokee Triangle that you can access from Grinstead Dr or Bassett Ave. It’s not a long street but it contains some of the sweetest homes in The Highlands that you can find. Now, we all have our favorite streets in Louisville and if you are not familiar with Ransdell I would encourage you to do a quick walk or drive. Not only will you be able to see Hunter S Thompson’s old home, but you can see what a delight this street would be to live on!
The Cherokee Triangle is home to a large collection of Victorian architecture as with the rest of the Highlands, and Ransdell falls in nicely with quite a few Victorians on the block. Home sales on Ransdell over the last 10 years have ranged from $300,000 all the way up to $1.2 million. Prices for Highlands homes in general land anywhere between $150,000 to $3.9 million. So what?
Here comes 2442 Ransdell Ave. Perched on the hill across the street from Hunter S Thompson’s old home, 2442 Ransdell is a gem of a Cherokee Triangle home! Currently listed for sale with Keller Williams Realty Louisville East, this home has every bit of charm and character that you would expect from a Highlands home, and the current list price is only $399,900. I am talking about gorgeous refinished hardwood floors, large dining room with access to the rear deck, a first floor powder room, and a fabulous remodeled eat-in kitchen! The exterior of the home has been freshly painted (which if you know anything about being in the Cherokee Triangle preservation district, you would know that exterior maintenance is a BIG deal), and the basement was reconfigured to have a very nice, non-creepy laundry room. The three second-floor bedrooms have tons of light pouring through the huge windows and share a large full bathroom with a double bowl vanity. You cannot overlook the amazing third floor, though. The space could be a master suite as there is closet space and a very unique full bathroom, or it could be the perfect art studio or office!
