Best Pizza in Louisville? How About 5 of Them.

I had such a good time doing the “Best Burger in Louisville” post a few months back, I figured I would take a minute to talk about one of my favorite things in the whole world…pizza!  Because there are so many different types of pizza in Louisville, and each local spot has so much to offer, I have to go with the top 5 list again.  I have eaten pizza all my life and it is definitely my favorite food.  When I think about the best pizza in Louisville, I have to keep in mind the quality of ingredients, flavor, consistency, sauce, specialty pizzas, crust, and restaurant amenities.

As far as consistency, quality, and flavor goes I have to give it up for Wick’s Pizza Parlor (original location on Baxter Ave is my home).  I get pizza from Wick’s on a regular basis.  It always looks and tastes the same way…delicious!  Wick’s has a hand tossed crust, a delicious homemade sauce, and they pile the toppings on perfectly.  There’s a lot of cheese, but not too much, and it is always cooked to perfection.  You can have a beer or cocktail with your eat-in pizza and maybe listen to some live music.  They also offer carry out and delivery.  Wick’s is a Louisville staple.  It has been around since the early 90’s, and now with five locations this pizza is around for good.

Another one of the best pizzas in Louisville is just down the street at Papalino’s NY Pizzeria.  Papalino’s has a homemade dough that is hand-stretched to the “thin and floppy” style that New York pizza is known for.  Add to it their homemade zesty marinara sauce and any number of toppings you want, and you have the recipe for awesome.  This pizza is cooked right on the stone, which adds to the amazing flavor that is demanded when you’re considered best pizza in Louisville. UPDATE: Unfortunately, Papalino’s has closed, however Louisville has new awesome New York Style pizza: The Post and Butchertown Pizza Hall

When it comes to the best specialty pizzas in Louisville, Cafe Lou Lou cannot be overlooked!  Visit either the St Matthews location on Sears Ave and you will be glad you did.  Cafe Lou Lou has all sorts of delicious menu items, but today I can only talk about their pizza, and it is fabulous.  The standard “Combination Pizza” is a wonderful balance of meats and veggies that won’t overpower the delicious homemade dough and sauce.  You can build your own or get creative with the “Potato Pizza” (marinara, mozz, sliced spicy rosemary potatoes, italian sausage, roma tomatoes, red onion, and smoked provolone), the “Lou Lou Pizza” (garlic sauce, mozz, red onion, rosated red peppers, bacon, goat cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes), the “Mediterranean Pizza” (marinara, mozz,roasted eggplant, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, roasted garlic, roma tomatoes, feta cheese, and capers), or any one of their creative combos!  Let’s not forget that they have one of the best beer lists in Louisville to go with your pizza.  Combine all of this to make a true leader in the category of best pizza in Louisville.

Along the same lines of best specialty pizzas in Louisville, but very different from Cafe Lou Lou is Tony Boombozz Recently they have popped up in Indianapolis and Arizona as franchises (Boombozz taphouse etc), but they began right here in Louisville as a single little shop.  Boombozz has won a number of awards locally and nationally for their concoctions like the D’Sienna or the Tuscan Chicken.  The marinara is herb heavy and awesome.  Most recently they decided to add thin, wheat, and gluten free pizza crust options to the menu.

Last, but certainly not least on the list of incredible pizza in Louisville is Coal’s Artisan Pizza in St Matthews.  This place strives to be as local as it gets by sourcing local ingredients, offering local beers, and each one of their specialty pizzas is named for an area of Louisville.  Coal’s uses a coal-fired oven that bakes your pizza at 1000 degrees, crisping the crust in a matter of minutes after the dough has been rising for 3 days!  They also offer a number of unique toppings like prosciutto, sopressata, mascarpone cheese, and sweet piquillo peppers.

Whatever your pizza style is there’s something for you here in Louisville.  To me, this diverse list of pizza represents some of Louisville’s brightest.  Are there other delicious pizzas in Louisville?  Absolutely.  Try one of these first and tell me what you think.
