IRONMAN Louisville 2013

ironman louisville eventpagelogo 200x70The IRONMAN triathlon first came to Louisville in 2007 and has quickly become a city favorite after five short years.  With 50 open age group slots, the Louisville IRONMAN is also the last qualifying event for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii. This year the race will take place on Sunday, August 25th and there are plenty of places for spectators to come out and root for the competitors.

Centered around the Ohio River, and more precisely the Great Lawn at Waterfront Park, This IRONMAN Triathlon is listed as one of their most iconic races.  The race starts with 2.4 miles of swimming in the Ohio River from the docks next to Tumbleweed heading east around towhead island and coming back downtown to transition on the great lawn.

From the Great Lawn your bike will have to carry you through the winding path heading east toward the hills in Oldham county.  The 112 mile scenic biking portion of the IRONMAN Triathlon is a mix of rolling hills and flat terrain with a two loop section that covers the historic city of La Grange in Oldham County.  Then you’re headed back downtown for the final transition on the Great Lawn.

The 26.2 mile run portion of the IRONMAN Triathlon takes you through downtown Louisville passed the University of Louisville campus into South Louisville where you will run right by the twin spires at Churchill Downs.  The entire race ends at Fourth Street Live right in the center of Downtown Louisville.

If you’re the triathlete type, you can register here.  There are obviously plenty of places to watch and cheer people on.  There are run stations at each mile during the run, and with all transitions taking place on the Great Lawn, you can catch a lot of the action right at Waterfront Park.  This is a great event for our city and for people that have never been to Louisville.  Can you race for 140.6 miles?
