As I posted back in December, the restaurant rock stars that started Havana Rumba, Mojito, Burger and Mussel Bar, etc, are opening a small taco joint on Baxter Ave across the street from Papalino’s Pizza. It is now officially open, and it is just as fabulous as you would expect. I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview at a soft opening for the new taqueria in the Highlands, El Taco Luchador, so I wanted to let you know what I ate and how delicious it was.
Carnitas Taco (#4)
Number four on their menu, but number one in my heart, the carnitas taco will make you dance. Crispy fried pork that has been marinated to perfection comes on a doubled up pair of soft corn tortillas with some pickled onions, some cilantro, a drizzle of sour cream, and another sauce that was so delicious, I was in a trance while eating it and forgot what it was. Yum.
Barbacoa Taco (#3)
I used to get the braised short rib at Mojito all the time back when Fernando and Christina were still involved with it. It was amazing. (I also used to order the carnitas tacos there. go figure). He has perfected the braised short rib, and now you can get it on a taco at El Taco Luchador! There is a sprinkling of toppings on the Barbacoa, and a huge amount of flavor.
Chicken Mole Taco (#5)
This mole (mol-ay) sauce is absolutely fantastic. The chicken marinates and simmers in the sauce, and falls apart to the touch. This taco has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and goes great with just a touch of their jalapeno sauce, which is in a squeeze bottle on each table.
On a side note, my buddy Nick was raving about the #14, El Norteno, which is a breaded ribeye sandwich. The homemade bolillo bread is awesome. I also heard a lot of chatter about the Mexican corn on the cob, or “elotes” (ay-low-tays). This is a standard Mexican street food similar to getting a hot dog from a street vendor on a New York City sidewalk. The corn is boiled, grilled, then deep fried and rolled in a creamy concoction that will elevate your palate.
I plan to try everything on the El Taco Luchador menu very soon. They officially opened to the public on the first of the year. Do yourself a favor and go get some!
