The Valentine’s Day Slacker: Last Minute Date Guide

Pink HeartLet’s be honest here. Guys are typically bad at remembering things like Valentine’s Day because we have a hard time with pink hearts and creepy flying man-children who shoot arrows at you. With that being said, we never want to disappoint our lady. So it is usually at this point during the week of Valentine’s Day that the light bulb goes off and we begin to panic. Fellas, have no fear. I have a few tips.

It’s a lifesaver. Seriously, go to and select Feb 14th (in case you forgot which day we are talking about) and pick a time. Open Table will show you restaurants in Louisville that still have availability. The phrase “beggars can’t be choosers” comes to mind here. Keep in mind that we all know that guy who has had his Valentine’s Day planned for two weeks, so the choice of reservation times will be slim. But I just logged in and found tables available in that 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm sweet spot at the following restaurants: El Camino, Rye, Troll Pub, The Silver Dollar, and Simply Thai.

2 | Home Cookin’

Maybe everyone got to the good tables first. You are left with no choice but to come up with a fabulous, romantic home cooked meal. I love to cook, so that’s not a problem for me, but for the guys out there that absolutely can’t cook, there are some really impressive frozen meals that you can whip up quickly with no skills. Barefoot Contessa now has a line of frozen dinners available at grocery stores, Bertolli makes some nice Italian bakes, and let’s not forget about Trader Joe’s. TJ has all sorts of pre-made meals that are fresh OR frozen, and they require little knowledge in the kitchen. Keep in mind that if home cooking is the route you take, there must be dessert, there must be flowers, and there must be candles. Homemade Pie and Ice Cream Kitchen or Sweet Surrender can help there.

3 | Kentucky Center for The Arts

There is also another technique that I like to call “the old switcharoo”. This involves finding something interesting and romantic that takes place on the day before or the day after Valentine’s Day. That way you have no choice but to plan your Valentine’s Day celebration on another day. If you go out on the 13th, 15th, or 16th, you will have a lot more places available for reservations, but remember… you have to have a reason to change the date. Kentucky Opera presents Romeo and Juliette at The Brown Theater on February 16th, and the Louisville POPS Orchestra presents Michael Feinstein performing with the Louisville Orchestra songs from The Great American Songbook and The Sinatra Project at The Kentucky Center for The Arts in Downtown Louisville on February 15th.

Hopefully you can put together a great evening for you and yours. There are always great events in Louisville, and there is no shortage of restaurants. If your last minute Valentine’s Day planning goes awry, there is always jewelry.
