Wake Up Call: Breakfast in Louisville

What is it about breakfast and brunch that makes people so happy? Some people love breakfast so much that they eat it for dinner. I can imagine that a lot of people like the waffle, doughnut, pancake-style breakfast for its sweetness. Others like the omelets and the breads. Who doesn’t like bacon fresh out of the frying pan? There are many aspects of a delicious breakfast meal, and whatever it is that you look for in the perfect breakfast can most likely be found in any number of Louisville restaurants. Here are a few of Louisville’s best bets when it comes to the most important meal of the day!

Highland Morning | 1416 Bardstown Rd

HighlandMorningHighland Morning is a small shop on Bardstown Rd in the heart of the Highlands near Eastern Pkwy. The locally owned breakfast/lunch cafe recently expanded their restaurant so that you can actually get a table! When they first opened there was a line of people waiting for a table every time I drove by. It is most certainly worth the wait, however the expansion has cut the wait time. The menu is loaded with omelets, french toast, waffles, pancakes (some say the best pancakes ever), burritos, homemade biscuits and amazing gravy, and it’s all creatively delicious! My favorite? The “wake me up omelet”. This thing is filled with chorizo, jalapenos, bell peppers, onions, pico de gallo, chipotle sour cream, and queso fundido. Amazing.

Wagner’s Pharmacy | 3113 S 4th St

Wagner’s Pharmacy has been all about serving Churchill Downs and its patrons since 1922. Not only is this establishment a pharmacy and a general store, Wagner’s serves one of the best breakfasts in Louisville and they can even heal your tired racehorse! The menu is classic and provides enough options for everyone, offering a few breakfast plates, a few omelets, and a whole slew of a la cart side items. Their signature omelet contains ham, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and cheeses, and it was featured on Thowdown with Bobby Flay. Go to Wagner’s and be part of this historic Louisville restaurant!

The Cafe | 712 Brent St

TheCafeLocated on the edge of the Highlands and downtown, The Cafe brings you delectable breakfast and lunch with a southern touch, in a unique Louisville atmosphere. The menus provide you with carefully thought out breakfast and lunch items that will make you happy and keep you coming back. Try the southern grits scramble or the twice baked french toast and you won’t be disappointed. The Cafe and its hip industrial building might not look like much from the outside, but you can rest assured that the meals you receive inside are top notch!

SuperChefs | Highlands

10955284_716426441820274_6897643230630672087_nDarnell Ferguson started SuperChefs with his friend as a pop-up breakfast concept that traveled to diffeferent non-breakfast restaurants around town. They eventually opened a superhero-themed brick and mortar restaurant in St Matthews across from Trinity High School. People were loving it! Business was booming until a fire completed destroyed the space. The community responded with love and helped Ferguson and his team to rebuild, and a year later, they opened on Bardstown Rd next to Sapporo where Strati Wild Italin used to be. SuperChefs is known for a waffle donut, specialty flavored pancakes like the Reese’s pancake, and candied bacon. Yum! You should certainly check this place out. They also serve lunch!

Wild Eggs | Multiple Louisville Locations

Wild Eggs has made a serious name for themselves in the Louisville restaurant community. Their concept is pretty simple, but it changed the way a lot of people do breakfast. Wild Eggs presents your breakfast in a way that makes you feel like you’re sitting at in a white tablecloth restaurant spending a lot of money. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money, and you don’t have to worry about pretentious portion sizes either. I promise you will leave with a full stomach. Build your own omelet or try one of their creations. Mix in some french toast with sweet cream cheese icing too! No matter what you try on this menu, you will love it. Word to the wise: Eat an “everything muffin”. It’s quite simply the best muffin I have ever had. Once you’re finished eating the muffin, you will most likely order a dozen to go.

Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day. Why not start the day off properly with an incredible meal from one of these fine Louisville restaurants!
