Best Tacos in Louisville

Eating a delicious taco is one of my favorite things to do. You may have noticed a growing population of taco shops around Louisville in the past couple of years. I suppose people finally realized that we have more pizza restaurants than people. Louisville’s taco trend has actually worked out great for taco-lovers like myself, because there seems to be friendly competition between restaurants to create the best tacos in Louisville. They just keep getting better! Below are my favorite tacos in Louisville. Some are down right authentic, and others are a bit creative, but one thing’s for certain: they’re all ridiculously delicious.

El Molcajete | 2932 S 4th St

molcjetechristmasYou want authentic? This is your place. Not only is this one of the best tacos in Louisville, but it’s the best place to go for a variety of the most authentic ingredients you can find. Beef tongue and tripe are among these ingredients, but their steak, chicken, and pork are amazing as well. El Molcajete is located just a stone’s throw from U of L and Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Try all of their authentic Mexican cuisine!

**My favorites: Chorizo, Asada, and Pastor.

The Ville Taqueria | 3922 Westport Rd

villetacosLocated behind BBC in St Matthews, The Ville Taqueria has just recently taken over the impossible space where Carolina Shrimp used to dwell. If they continue to crank out fresh, delicious tacos like I had the other day, then it’s safe to say that this location has found a keeper. This is exactly what St Matthews needed, and it’s open late so that everyone has a chance to enjoy its deliciousness. These fabulous Louisville tacos are offered as “street style” with cilantro and onion (my favorite), or “CLT” with cheese, lettuce and tomato.

**My favorites: Arrachera, Barbacoa, and Orange Bourbon Carnitas

Manny and Merle | 122 W Main St

MannyMerleMercerAnother brilliant addition to central downtown Louisville, Manny and Merle is the brainchild of Tony Palombino (Boombozz Pizzeria / Taphouse). Now entering its third year on the corner across from the KFC Yum! Center, the concept has really grown and come into its own since opening. This is a “taco-slingin’ honkey tonk”, and as soon as you enter the historic brick building, you’ll understand. The simple menu lends itself to easy ordering, and quick turn around (if needed). You can also catch live music at Manny and Merle at least three nights a week while you eat some of Louisville’s best tacos!

**My favorites: Green Chili Pork (crack alert! this is the best taco in the whole world!) and the Brisket.

El Mundo | 2345 Frankfort Ave

ElMundoEl Mundo has been a Louisville favorite for tacos, burritos and spectacular specials since 1995. It’s a cozy little spot in Clifton with an interesting layout: counter service and open kitchen on the main floor, table service and a bar on the second floor, and one of the best patios you can find in this city right in their backyard! Pretty much everything on the menu is fantastic. Carnitas are sure to please, and anytime you see a special taco on the board just order it and don’t look back. You won’t find a better fish taco in the world.

**My favorites: FISH TACOS!!!

Taco Luchador | 938 Baxter Ave

TacoLuchador2You can visit their brick and mortar restaurant in the Highlands or be on the lookout for their mobile taco truck around town. Either way, they make some of the best tacos in Louisville. This place is busy during most hours of the day, but don’t let a line scare you away. You can get in and out pretty quickly even at their busiest, and you’ll be happy you did. I recommend using both the homemade arbol sauce, and the insanely addicting jalapeno sauce for any taco you get.

**My favorites: the Chicken Mole´ and the Short Rib Barbacoa

Holy Mole´ | Mobile Taco Truck

holy mole-2The Holy Mole´ Taco Truck can be found all over Louisville. Most notably they hang out at the Flea Off Market, and the Gray Street Farmer’s market, but you can also catch them at a number of special events around town. One of the best things about this food truck is that the menu changes quite frequently, however you’re always guaranteed something amazing will be available! Try one of each taco on the menu, you can’t go wrong.

**My favorites: Chorizo and the Soft Shell Crab (not always available)

If you love tacos as much as I do then you’re in luck. Start exploring Louisville’s taco scene and you will be delighted with what you find!
